On Wednesday, April 2, 2025, the School of Allied Health Sciences, through its mission on Academic Service and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), organized the event “SAH Unites to Celebrate and Preserve Thai Traditions on Songkran Day 2025”. The celebration took place at Fuengfah Meeting Room, Academic Building 7, School of Allied Health Sciences, Walailak University.
The event was graciously presided over by Dr. Mongkol Teerananond, Vice President of Walailak University, and was attended by the Dean, executive members, faculty, and staff of the School. The celebration took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere, featuring a Buddhist chanting ceremony to bring blessings to all attendees, a traditional water-pouring ceremony to pay respects to elders, and the ceremonial bathing of a Buddha image, which symbolizes spiritual cleansing and renewal.
Songkran, the Thai New Year, is rooted in ancient beliefs about the transition of zodiac signs and is considered the official beginning of a new year according to Thai tradition. Traditionally, Songkran is celebrated within families, and at the School, which serves as a “second home” for its members, the same spirit of unity and reverence is upheld.
Water plays a central role in the ceremony, symbolizing purification and renewal. This tradition coincides with the movement of the sun into Aries, marking the height of the summer season. Pouring water over the hands of elders is a way of showing respect and seeking blessings, while sprinkling water among peers is a gesture of refreshment and good wishes for the year ahead.
Through this event, the School of Allied Health Sciences aims to foster a sense of community, preserve cultural values, and provide a meaningful opportunity for staff and faculty to connect, reflect, and celebrate the beauty of Thai heritage together.
