Gratitude for the Warm Welcome of Prof. Kokhi Okada and Strengthening International Collaboration

The School of Allied Health Sciences at Walailak University is deeply honored to have hosted Professor Kokhi Okada from Kyoto-Tachibana University, Japan, for a visit from August 8 to 11, 2024. This visit represents a significant milestone in our efforts to strengthen international collaboration, particularly in the field of Medical Technology.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all who contributed to making Professor Okada’s visit a success. Special appreciation goes to Prof. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, for his warm welcome remarks; Assoc. Prof. Voravuth Somsak, Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences; Asst. Prof. Orawan Sarakul, Vice Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences; Asst. Prof. Nurdina Charong, Head of the Medical Technology Department; Asst. Prof. Suriyan Sukati, Director of the Medical Technology International Program; Asst. Prof. Rachasak Boonhok, Assistant Dean for International Affairs, and all faculty members who engaged in fruitful discussions on academic collaboration with Professor Okada.

We also thank Assoc. Prof. Manit Nuinoon, Chair of the Medical Technology Program, and Asst. Prof. Malatee Tayeh, Head of the Medical Technology Clinic, for facilitating a smart classroom and laboratory tour, which highlighted our state-of-the-art facilities. We are particularly grateful to our representative Medical Technology students—Nattawut Thawornnurak, Veerapat Chunlaseneechon, and Kewarin Dokbualuang—who actively participated in the program. Their involvement provided a unique opportunity for our students to interact with a foreign professor, enhancing their communication skills and cultural understanding.

We sincerely hope that this visit will pave the way for further collaboration in student mobility, teaching, and research, especially in the field of Medical Technology. The engagement and support from everyone involved have set a strong foundation for a lasting partnership with Kyoto-Tachibana University, contributing to the global advancement of education and research.

The "Students Meet Dean and Byenior MT BP/Inter 2024"

The "Students Meet Dean and Byenior MT BP/Inter 2024" event on July 10, 2024, at Chada@Nakorn Hotel aimed to promote the development of international and global attributes among students, encouraging them to think boldly, express themselves, take action, and be creative in ways that align with global standards. The event also celebrated the bilingual medical technology students who are set to graduate in 2024.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Voravuth Somsak, Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Suriyan Sukati, Program Director of MT Inter, along with academic staffs, honored the students by presenting souvenirs and awards, and giving speeches to wish them success in their future careers and new chapters in life.

The atmosphere was filled with warm impressions and highlighted by a medley of songs performed by first to third-year students.

Prof. Jeremy Johnson Visits Walailak University's School of Allied Health Sciences

The School of Allied Health Sciences at Walailak University is delighted to announce the visit of Prof. Jeremy Johnson from UICenter, USA, on June 11, 2024. Prof. Johnson, a renowned expert in pharmacokinetics, has graciously accepted our invitation to discuss potential research collaborations and to visit an organic mangosteen farm in Lan-Saka, Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Prof. Jeremy Johnson is celebrated for his extensive contributions and recognitions in the field of pharmacokinetics, which have significantly enriched our understanding and knowledge. His visit offers a unique and invaluable opportunity for our faculty members and students to gain insights from his vast experience and expertise.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Assoc. Prof. Jitbanjong Tangpong for inviting Prof. Johnson to our school. Special thanks are also due to Asst. Prof. Sirirat Surinkaew for recommending the Excellence Center-RECIHP, Dr. Jiraporn Jaroenpool, the representative of SAH international affairs, Assoc. Prof. Morakot Chatathikun, Asst. Prof. Poonsit Hiransai, Dr. Kulwadee Lao-on, Dr. Udom Lao-on, K. 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

The Medical Technology (International Program) at Walailak University has launched an exchange program for student research training and collaboration in Germany. Asst. Prof. Issara Prachongsai, representing the Medical Technology Programs, accompanied five undergraduate students to visit two renowned research institutions.

Three students, Mr. Nithiwat, Ms. Santhita, and Ms. Pawinee, were selected to join Dr. Med. Thomas Bumm's research group at the Universitätsklinikum Würzburg for two months of research training (1 May – 30 June 2024). The training focuses on molecular biology and therapeutic drugs in oncology. This training program offers them the opportunity to engage in joint research projects, attend specialized workshops, and immerse themselves in the academic and cultural environments of their host institution.

Ms. Zia and Ms. Nattacha, chosen for research training in innovation, have joined Biotechrabbit GmbH in Berlin. Their training includes developing diagnostic kits at an industrial level. The scientific innovation at Biotechrabbit is expected to broaden the students' perspectives on research and its industrial applications. The Medical Technology Program (International Program) at Walailak University is the first international bachelor's degree in Medical Technology in Thailand, certified by the Thailand MT Council. The program aims to produce qualified graduates in medical laboratory sciences meeting international standards. All Student will receive support for research training costs, airfare, and stipends during their international training.

The launch of this exchange program marks a pivotal moment in the realm of international education and research. By facilitating cross-border collaboration and cultural exchange, the program is paving the way for a more interconnected and innovative global community. Participants are eager to embark on this transformative journey, which promises to leave a lasting impact on their academic and professional lives.

Global Academic Exchange: Walailak University’s Medical Technology (International Program) Scholars in Istanbul

From April 25th to 27th, 2024, a delegation of 42 students, accompanied by six esteemed faculty members and an academic staff, embarked on an enriching academic journey to Istanbul, Türkiye. Hailing from the esteemed School of Allied Health Sciences at Walailak University, the delegation delved into a multifaceted exploration of medical advancements and research trends.

Their voyage commenced with an illuminating visit to the prestigious Faculty of Pharmacy at Istanbul University. Immersed in a dynamic exchange of knowledge, they delved into the intricate art of phytochemical extraction from medicinal plants, explored cutting-edge trends in medical research, and marveled at the latest technological innovations in the field of medicine.

The pinnacle of their academic expedition was marked by their participation in the esteemed 10th International Mediterranean Symposium on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MESMAP-10). Among the distinguished scholars, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jitbanjong Tangpong was honored to deliver a captivating lecture titled “Garcinia mangostana (A Queen of Fruit): Biological Properties in Relation to Health Promotion,” showcasing the rich potential of natural resources in promoting human well-being.

Further exemplifying Walailak University’s commitment to scholarly excellence, Asst. Prof. Dr. Suriyan Sukati, alongside Sutthichai Thaokhamwong and Viva Jitcheun, showcased their groundbreaking research on the “Fibrinolytic and Thrombolytic Potential of Indigenous Vegetables from Southern Thailand.” Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chonticha Romyasamit and Gridthin Ungrattanachai presented their pioneering research on the “Antioxidant, Antibacterial, and Antibiofilm Activities of Aqueous Crude Gymnema inodorum Leaf Extract Against Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus faecium,” garnering acclaim for their innovative approach to combating antibiotic resistance.

In addition, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nateelak Kooltheat, alongside Pimchanok Jenjai and Chonnawee Chamnanvaschakit, shared insights into the “Phytochemical Compositions, Antioxidant Activities, and Anti-Inflammatory Activities of Artemisia lactiflora Extract,” shedding light on potential therapeutic avenues.

The scholarly odyssey continued with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wetpisit Chanmol and Panupong Yaya presenting their pioneering research on the “Antileishmanial Activity and In Silico Molecular Docking Studies of Zingiber cassumunar Roxb. Extract against Leishmania chagasi,” underscoring the university’s commitment to advancing global health initiatives.

Encouraging all students to embrace the enriching tapestry of international academic experiences, Walailak University reaffirms its dedication to fostering cross-cultural exchange and scholarly excellence. The Medical Technology Program, School of Allied Health Sciences, Walailak University, organized a Personality Development and Final Year Seminar for the Medical Technology Department for the academic year 2023.

On Wednesday, April 24, 2024, the Medical Technology Program, School of Allied Health Sciences, Walailak University, hosted a Personality Development and Final Year Seminar for the Medical Technology Department, class of 2023 (23rd batch of prospective graduates). The event was honored by the presence of the Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences, the Vice Dean, the Head of Department, program directors, administrators, and faculty members who gave inspirational speeches to the prospective graduates, along with expert speakers.

Associate Professor Dr. Worawut Somsak, Dean, delivered a talk on "How to Write a CV and Nail a Job Interview."

Instructor Povirasa Praditsorn delivered a talk on "Enhancing Your Personality to Achieve Success and Stand Out."

Additionally, alumni from Walailak University's Medical Technology Program shared their experiences on pursuing a career after graduation in a session titled "Casual Conversations on Career Opportunities Post-Graduation: MT Alumni Share Insights and Opportunities," which included advice on pursuing graduate studies. There was also a special segment where faculty members engaged with the students of MTWU23 in an energetic and interactive session.

Furthermore, the event was graced by Assistant Professor Dr. Anek Puthong, a representative from the Medical Technology Council, who led the MTC Road Show as part of the promotional campaign for 2024. This activity aimed to prepare students for the medical technology profession by providing an understanding of the role of the professional council, the importance of membership, and the necessary information channels for starting a career in this field. The session also emphasized building positive relationships and fostering active participation among members from the very beginning of their professional journey, which will help enhance the practice of the profession and the role of the council in the future.

International MedTech Camp 2024

On March 9-10, 2024, the Medical Technology International program hosted a camp. Assistant Prof. Suriyan Sukati, Ph.D., the Head of the program, welcomed high school students and opened the event. The camp aimed to provide education to high school students about Medical Technology, explaining the roles of Medical Technologists and the advantages of choosing the Medtech Inter program at WU. Throughout the event, various workshops covered essential aspects of Medical Technology, including Transfusion Science, Immunology, Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, Hematology, and Clinical Microscopy:

Testing from each role of Medical Technology aspects:

📌 Transfusion Science

ABO grouping

📌 Immunology

Agglutination and 2-fold dilution

📌 Clinical Chemistry

Blood sugar testing

📌 Microbiology

Microbial cultivation from surrounding objects

📌 Hematology

Blood sampling from the artificial arm and separation of blood cells from blood smears

📌 Clinical Microscopy

Gynecological examinations and urinalysis

The camp achieved tremendous success, attracting nearly 500 student registrations. However, due to limited capacity, only 60 students could actively participate in the event. The fortunate 60 attendees received a gift set as a token of appreciation. In addition to academic learning, they also enjoyed nature sightseeing at the Botanic Garden, had fun, and built strong relationships among themselves.

At the end of the event, Assistant Professor Suriyan Sukti, Ph.D., joined to bid farewell and encouraged the students to consider becoming part of the WU family. Overall, the Medical Technology International Camp provided high school students with an incredible opportunity to explore the field of Medical Technology and discover the possibilities available at WU. The event left attendees feeling inspired and motivated to pursue their dreams. We eagerly anticipate the impact they will make in the industry in the future.

Medical Technology Department (MTWU) Seminar in the fiscal year 2567 with the theme “Review and Revise: Navigating the future for MT 67”

The Medical Technology Department at the School of Allied Health Sciences, Walailak University, successfully conducted an insightful seminar in the fiscal year 2567 with the compelling theme, "Review and Revise: Navigating the Future for MT 67," held from February 24 to 26, 2024, at the Ramada by Wyndham Aonang Krabi.

This seminar proved to be a comprehensive reflection on the past year's operations, focusing on three pivotal areas: students, staff, and curriculum. Through meticulous review, the seminar aimed to present valuable suggestions and recommendations for each facet, setting the course for the current year and beyond.

In addition to this introspection, the seminar fostered shared understanding on diverse topics such as Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), international capacity development for staff, and Internal Integrity and Transparency Assessment (IIT). Beyond the enriching sessions, attendees also had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the lively and beautiful atmosphere of Krabi province's seas during the high season.

This successful event provided a valuable opportunity for attendees to collectively shape the future of Medical Technology. Participants enjoyed three days of insightful discussions and the chance to experience the vibrant ambiance of Krabi.

The Student Club of the School of Allied Health Sciences at Walailak University collaborated with students from the Medical Technology and Medical Technology International Programs to take part in the 23rd Medical Technology-Allied Health Sciences Relations Sports Activity, known as the “Rachawadee Rangsit Games,” hosted at Rangsit University in Pathum Thani Province.

On January 6-7, 2024, the Student Club of the School of Allied Health Sciences at Walailak University collaborated with students from the Medical Technology and Medical Technology International Programs to take part in the 23rd Medical Technology-Allied Health Sciences Relations Sports Activity, known as the “Rachawadee Rangsit Games,” hosted at Rangsit University in Pathum Thani Province.

The event aimed to foster positive relations and unity among students from the Faculty of Medical Technology and the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences across 14 universities in Thailand, including Mahidol University, Chulalongkorn University, Thammasat University, Chiang Mai University, Khon Kaen University, Naresuan University, Burapha University, University of Phayao, Prince of Songkla University, Walailak University, Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University, Pathum Thani University, Rangsit University, and Huachiew Chalermprakiet University. Participants engaged in a variety of sports competitions, including football, volleyball, basketball, badminton, table tennis, petanque, and E-sports. Walailak University secured an impressive 2nd place in volleyball. Additionally, the students actively took part in local sports activities, recreational events, and showcased their potential through demonstrations related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

On December 8, 2023, the Department of Medical Technology at the School of Allied Health Sciences successfully hosted the International MT Student Research Competition 2023. This virtual conference, themed "Beyond Borders: Adapting to Changing Global Perspectives," took place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The event began with an insightful report by Associate Professor Dr. Voravuth Somsak, the Acting Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences, outlining the objectives of the conference. The prestigious opening ceremony was honored by Associate Professor Dr. Palani Ammaranon, the President of the Council of Deans of Medical Technologist Institutes. The distinguished Keynote Speaker for the occasion was Prof. Dr. Chia-Rui Shen from Chang Gung University, Taiwan, whose presentation focused on the "Identification of IL-17 as a Prognosis Predictor and Therapeutic Target in Tumors."

This collaborative initiative was facilitated through the joint efforts of the Institute for Producing Medical Technology Graduates, the Committee from the Medical Technology Association, and the Medical Technology Council. The conference attracted over 230 participants, encompassing both attendees and presenters. Representatives from a total of 13 institutions shared their research through a combination of oral and poster presentations. Beyond highlighting innovative research in the field of medical technology, this collaborative endeavor played a pivotal role in nurturing valuable connections between graduate-producing institutions in the country and esteemed universities abroad.
