Representatives from the Medical Technology Program, School of Allied Health Sciences, Walailak University, Win First Prize at the R2M Regional Competition, Advancing as Southern Representatives to the National Stage

The School of Allied Health Sciences congratulates Team Artemis on winning first place in the regional round (Southern region) of the R2M (Research to Market) 2024 competition, part of the 12th Innovation to Commercialization Pathway Project. Their project, titled “Helicobacter pylori Detection Test Kit,” was presented by Medical Technology students Mr. Tharathap Wijid, Ms. Anantaya Porasantisuk, and Ms. Chayanin Sriarunpannara. The team was advised by Assistant Professor Dr. Suebtarakoon Wisetsombat, a faculty member of the School of Allied Health Sciences.

 

The competition took place on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at the Sky Blue Auditorium, Administration Building, Southern Science Park, Songkhla Province.

NYCU Delegation Visits Walailak University for Academic Collaboration

On December 2, 2024, a distinguished delegation from National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), Taiwan, visited the School of Allied Health Sciences at Walailak University, Thailand. The visit aimed to gain insights into the academic environment at Walailak University and to expand and strengthen collaboration between the two institutions.

 

The NYCU delegation included three prominent professors from the Department of Biotechnology and Laboratory Science in Medicine: Prof. Jason-C. Huang, an expert in viral infections and immunology; her colleague, Prof. Yih-Hsin Chang, known for her work on adipogenesis and metabolic diseases; and Prof. Shr-Jeng Leu, the Director of Clinical Laboratory at NYCU Hospital, who specializes in recombinant protein expression and cancer immunobiology.

 

During the visit, the NYCU team engaged in a panel discussion focused on staff and student mobility, particularly emphasizing student research training and graduate study programs. They toured Walailak University facilities, including smart classrooms and laboratories essential for medical technology education. The delegation also expressed interest in visiting the lab section of the Walailak University Hospital and explored the Physical Therapy clinic, allowing them to witness innovative healthcare practices firsthand.

 

The event was a collaborative effort led by Asst. President Suthasinee Sangkham and Assoc. Prof. Voravuth Somsak, Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences. Significant contributions came from Asst.Prof.Rachasak Boonhok, Asst Dean for International Affairs and Dr. Suphasarang Sirirattanakul, the Head of the event, and the dedicated SAH international affairs team. A heartfelt thank you is extended to all faculty members who participated in this event, as well as to the two Medical Technology students, Chinnakrit Claybut and Suttichai Tawkamwong, who assisted in organizing the visit and showcasing local Thai culture, including a taste of Southern Thai cuisine.

 

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Assoc. Prof. Jitbanjong Tangpong for his exemplary efforts in initiating this valuable collaboration. Additionally, we wish to thank Asst. Prof. Suriyan Sukati for his dedication in launching the student research training program, which facilitates the opportunity for our students to study at NYCU for a semester. Their contributions are instrumental in fostering academic growth and enhancing the opportunities available to our students.

 

The successful meeting underscored a renewed commitment to strengthening the partnership between NYCU and Walailak University. Walailak University’s School of Allied Health Sciences warmly welcomed esteemed international guests during a special session aimed at strengthening academic and research collaboration. The event was graced by Asst. President Suthasinee Sangkhum; Asst. Prof. Patnarin Supakorn, Director of the Center for International Affairs; Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences, Voravuth Somsak; Vice Dean Asst. Prof. Orawan Sarakul; and Asst. Prof. Anoma Santiworakul, alongside faculty members from the School of Allied Health Sciences.

 

The honored guests included Asst. Prof. Hazel Anne Tabo from De La Salle University (DLSU), Philippines; Ms. Diana P. Mendonca from the University of Aveiro, Portugal; and Dr. Arutchelvan Rajamanikam and Dr. Kashini Jeya Pirathaba from the School of Medicine, University of Malaya, Malaysia.

 

Special thanks were extended to Prof. Veeranoot Nissapatorn for coordinating the visit and initiating discussions on short-term research training opportunities, particularly in Acanthamoeba and medicinal plant studies. This engagement opened doors to future collaborations, offering insights into research at the University of Malaya and De La Salle University.

 

The discussions were productive, sparking new ideas to advance human health and sciences and showcasing the graduate programs at the University of Malaya, which garnered interest from participants.

Prof. Julien Pompon Visits Walailak University to Enhance Research on Mosquito Vectors
Montpellier, France - Walailak University welcomed Prof. Julien Pompon from MIVEGEC-IRD for a five-day visit from October 22-26, 2024, initiated by Dr. Jiraporn Jaroenpool. The visit aimed to familiarize Prof. Pompon with the university's environment and research facilities while fostering collaboration on arboviruses ex. Dengue Virus, Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV), etc and mosquito vectors.
During his stay, Prof. Pompon delivered three insightful lectures that significantly enriched the faculty's understanding of viral transmission and the role of sfRNA in mosquito vectors. His expertise in effective manuscript preparation for high-impact journals was especially valuable, providing attendees with practical guidance on enhancing their publications.
The faculty members expressed gratitude for Prof. Pompon’s contributions, which have positively impacted their research capabilities. They also appreciated the warm hospitality extended by Dr. Suthasinee Sangkhum, Assistant to the President, and Asst. Prof. Patnarin Supakorn, CIA Director, as well as Assoc. Prof. Voravuth Somsak, Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences.

Knowledge Assessment Project for 3rd and 4th Year Medical Technology Students, Academic Year 2024
The Medical Technology Program, School of Allied Health Sciences, Walailak University, organized the annual Knowledge Assessment Project for 3rd and 4th year Medical Technology students for the 2024 academic year. This year took place on Sunday, June 30, 2024, and Sunday, July 7, 2024.
This project is a part of the school’s ongoing mission to produce well-qualified graduates. The primary objectives are to enable students to review their knowledge, self-assess their progress at each academic level, and prepare for their professional licensure exams. A total of 368 students participated in this year’s assessment, including 197 third-year students and 171 fourth-year students.
From the results, 39 students scored above the 90th percentile, including 22 third-year students and 17 fourth-year students. The Medical Technology Program, School of Allied Health Sciences, congratulations to all students who received certificates of achievement and commemorative gifts on this occasion.

Global Multiprofessional and Cultural Camp 2024 with Showa University Concludes: A Successful Week of Learning and Cultural Exchange
School of Allied Health Sciences Welcomes Staff and Students from Showa University
The Global Multiprofessional and Cultural Camp 2024, held from August 8-15 in collaboration with Showa University, has successfully concluded, leaving participants with invaluable experiences and memories. The week flew by as students from both Thailand and Japan engaged in a rich program designed to enhance their understanding of healthcare systems, community health, and the cultural nuances of each country.
Throughout the camp, students delved into various aspects of healthcare, with a particular focus on the care of the elderly—an increasingly important topic as both nations face the challenges of aging societies. The program also offered insights into the differences and similarities between Thai and Japanese healthcare systems, as well as community health practices, through activities such as home visits.

Beyond the academic focus, this year’s camp emphasized cultural exchange, with students exploring the unique food, traditions, and daily lives of people in Southern Thailand. These experiences not only broadened their cultural perspectives but also fostered deeper connections and friendships, aligning perfectly with the camp’s goal of supporting international collaboration.

The successful execution of this program was made possible through the support and contributions of numerous individuals. Special thanks are extended to Prof. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University; Assoc. Prof. Surin Maisrikrod, Vice-President for Global Engagement and Learning and Teaching Development; Asst. Prof. Patnarin Supakorn, Director for International Affairs; Assoc. Prof. Voravuth Somsak, Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences; Asst. Prof. Orapen Sukhavulli, Dean of the School of Nursing; and Asst. Prof. Pornchanuch Chumpunuch, who led the program. Their leadership, along with the efforts of the dedicated faculty, supporting staff, and Thai buddy students from both schools, was instrumental in creating a successful and memorable experience.
On the Showa University side, gratitude is extended to Prof. Yoshiko Kudo from the International Exchange Center, whose vision and initiative have fostered numerous academic activities between Showa University and Walailak University, significantly expanding international collaboration. Thanks also go to Dr. Takeshi Miura, Asst. Prof. Eiji Miyake, and Prof. Nadami Mimura from the School of Nursing and Rehabilitation, who shared their knowledge and expertise, contributing greatly to the educational experience of students in Nursing, Physical Therapy, and Medical Technology.
As the camp comes to a close, there is a shared hope that this event will serve as a foundation for strengthening the relationship between the two universities, paving the way for future academic collaborations and expanded opportunities in various fields. The School of Allied Health Sciences (SAH) at Walailak University, in collaboration with the School of Nursing (SON), is delighted to welcome staff and students from Showa University, Japan, for the 2024 Global Multi-Professional and Cultural Camp. The event, running from August 8 to 15, focuses on enhancing healthcare knowledge and fostering cultural exchange.

The opening ceremony, held today at the Chorpradu Chamber, WU Hospital, was presided over by Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of WU. Seven students from Showa University, led by Professor Dr. Yoshiko Kudo, joined the event alongside SAH and SON faculty members.
Professor Dr. Sombat warmly welcomed the participants, highlighting the camp's importance in promoting academic excellence and cultural understanding. Associate Professor Dr. Voravuth Somsak, Dean of SAH, noted that this is the second year of collaboration with Showa University, with a special focus on community healthcare for children and the elderly.

This visit represents a significant milestone in our efforts to strengthen international collaboration, particularly in the field of Medical Technology.

The event also celebrated the bilingual medical technology students who are set to graduate in 2024.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Voravuth Somsak, Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Suriyan Sukati, Program Director of MT Inter, along with academic staffs, honored the students by presenting souvenirs and awards, and giving speeches to wish them success in their future careers and new chapters in life.

The School of Allied Health Sciences at Walailak University is delighted to announce the visit of Prof. Jeremy Johnson from UICenter, USA, on June 11, 2024. Prof. Johnson, a renowned expert in pharmacokinetics, has graciously accepted our invitation to discuss potential research collaborations and to visit an organic mangosteen farm in Lan-Saka, Nakhon Si Thammarat.
Prof. Jeremy Johnson is celebrated for his extensive contributions and recognitions in the field of pharmacokinetics, which have significantly enriched our understanding and knowledge. His visit offers a unique and invaluable opportunity for our faculty members and students to gain insights from his vast experience and expertise.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Assoc. Prof. Jitbanjong Tangpong for inviting Prof. Johnson to our school. Special thanks are also due to Asst.
